The story of Jodrell Bank –

Professor Ian Morison, G0DMU will give a review of the history of Jodrell Bank, one of the world’s premier radio astronomy observatories; from its founding in 1945, the completion of the Mk I (now Lovell) radio telescope in 1957 – still the third largest fully steerable telescope in the world – and the building of the MERLIN array in the 1980s and 90s.
The MERLIN array has the same resolution as the Hubble Space Telescope and many collaborative observations have been made over the past 30 years. Its seven telescopes also link up with others across Europe to provide an instrument whose resolution far exceeds that of optical telescopes.
Some of its most exciting discoveries will be discussed in the context of how radio observations are made – many of which can complement those made by optical telescopes.

Deze avond zal Henk PA2S ingaan propagatie op de 60m band naar het zuidwestelijk deel van de Stille Oceaan. Henk heeft eerder al wat verteld over zijn onderzoek. Het onderzoek loopt nog en levert ook nieuwe informatie op.
Henk zal ons in de lezing meenemen naar de schatkamer van de nachtelijke ionosfeer, die tussen avondschemer en ochtendgloren vele verrassingen in petto heeft. Naast theoretische achtergronden zullen ook diverse praktische kanten worden belicht, zoals tijdstippen van de gunstige omstandigheden. Ook zal worden uitgelegd waarom bepaalde gebieden op aarde juist veel lastiger te bereiken zijn.
Eind 2015 kwam de 60 meterband voor het eerst beschikbaar voor Nederlandse radiozendamateurs. Een nieuwe band en dus nieuwe ervaringen. Het was opvallend dat de signaalsterkten van een station uit Australië piekten rond dezelfde tijd op opeenvolgende dagen. De nieuwsgierigheid was gewekt en dat was de start van een onderzoek naar de mogelijke oorzaken van de geobserveerde verschijnselen. Dit onderzoek maakt nog steeds vorderingen.
Uit latere contacten bleek dat propagatie naar locaties in het zuidwestelijk deel van de Stille Oceaan verrassend goed was. Vooral tussen West-Europa en Nieuw-Zeeland bleken uitzonderlijk goede condities veelvuldig voor te komen, waardoor zelfs met 10 Watt zendvermogen verbindingen bijna dagelijks mogelijk waren. Signaalsterkten piekten steeds rondom de tijd van zonsopgang in Europa.
Henk Schanssema, PA2S, kreeg belangstelling voor ionosferische golfvoortplanting tegen het eind van de jaren ’70 van de vorige eeuw. Hij heeft ook twee rapporten geschreven, waarin waarnemingen op 50 MHz tijdens zonnecyclus 22 werden geanalyseerd.
