In this talk Heather will cover an introduction to flying HABs (High Altitude Balloons), the radio systems involved, some science experiments she did on their flights, the recovery system she developed to help find the payload when it lands and, of course, lots of pictures from “almost” the edge of space.

Jack and Al collaborated to build the T41-EP, a 7 band, 20W, CW/SSB SDR transceiver and this presentation is chiefly about how they developed the high performance CW decoder.
Jack and Al co-authored the Software Defined Radio Transceiver (2022) and Microcontroller Projects for Amateur Radio (2019) books and numerous articles and presentations. They are also co-founders of the Greater Cincinnati Builders Group and were awarded the RSGB’s Bennett Prize in 2021 for their article on their “Double-Double Magnetic Loop” antenna article in the February, 2020, issue of RadCom.

Node-RED is a visual programming language that is very powerful but surprisingly easy to use. The language has matured over recent years and has the potential to be a valuable tool for radio amateurs. In this talk, Mike will provide an introduction to Node-RED programming techniques. He will conclude with a live demonstration to show just how easy it can be to add extra facilities to your rig.

Receiving Antennas are Different

Almost every ham radio station can benefit from a separate receiving antenna (or several!) While reciprocity applies to both receiving and transmitting antennas, the priorities are different. Effective receiving antennas are optimized for best signal to noise ratio, not necessarily the greatest gain. There are countless interesting means of building high signal to noise ratio receiving antennas and we will explore some of these in ‘Receiving Antennas are Different’.

Tag der Offenen Tür am 100-m-Radioteleskop Effelsberg
Das Radio-Observatorium Effelsberg, die Außenstelle des Max-Planck-Instituts für Radioastronomie (MPIfR), öffnet am Samstag, 9. September 2023 von 10:00 – 17:00 Uhr seine Pforten für die Öffentlichkeit. Der “Tag der Offenen Tür” bietet eine hervorragende Gelegenheit, ganz nah an das große 100-m-Radioteleskop heranzukommen und vielleicht sogar die erste Teleskopplattform in 20 Metern Höhe betreten zu können.
Das Teleskop ist auch heute, mehr als 50 Jahre nach seiner Inbetriebnahme, das größte voll bewegliche Radioteleskop Europas. Es liegt, geschützt vor Störstrahlung von außen, in einem Tal bei Bad Münstereifel-Effelsberg, ca. 40 km südwestlich von Bonn. Auf dem Institutsgelände befindet sich auch eine Station des europäischen LOFAR-Teleskopnetzwerks für Radiobeobachtungen im Meterwellenbereich.
Am 9. September ist jedermann willkommen, das Institutsgebäude mit dem Steuerraum, von dem aus das Radioteleskop betrieben wird, und insbesondere das Teleskop selbst aus nächster Nähe zu besichtigen.
Beim Zugang auf die Elevationsbühne in 20 m Höhe sei darauf hingewiesen, dass dafür festes Schuhwerk erforderlich ist, ebenso ein guter Gesundheitszustand und keine Höhenangst. Dieser Teil des Programms ist für kleine Kinder nicht geeignet.
Es wird kein Eintritt erhoben und es ist keine vorherige Anmeldung erforderlich.
Parkeren direct bij de telescoop is slechts beperkt mogelijk (alleen invaliden), men moet van de publieke parkeerplaats een stukje wandelen (ca 1km) naar de installatie zelf.
Of gebruik maken van de speciale pendelbus die op de open dag wordt ingezet.
